Gambia News : Jail for Gambian mental health nurse who raped patients

gambia A Gambian mental health nurse who raped two of his patients has been jailed for at least four-and-a-half years.
 
John Mendy, 33, who worked at St Martin’s Hospital in Canterbury, will also be deported back to Gambia when he is released.
 
Mendy, from Cliffsend in Ramsgate, was sentenced by Judge Adele Williams at Canterbury Crown Court today, having previously pleaded guilty to two counts of rape.
 
Supt Chris Hogben described the offences as a “very serious breach of trust”.
 
He added: “Quite rightly, the public expect to be safe while being treated in hospital.

"The sentence passed today reflects the seriousness of both offences that this man has committed.

"I am extremely pleased with the professional way in which my staff investigated these crimes.

"I would also like to thank the hospital staff and management for the very full co-operation they gave to this sensitive investigation.

"Most of all, I would like to pay tribute to the victims in these cases. Without their bravery in coming forward to give evidence, it is likely we would have been unable to secure such a positive conviction for a man who poses a serious risk to women."
 
Kent Police decided not to release a picture of Mendy out of, they said, respect to his victims, following consultation with the family liaison officer.
