Gambia News : Jammeh calls for ceasefire in Southern Senegal
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh Tuesday called for a ceasefire and end
to 'all hostilities' in the troubled Southern province of Cas samance
in Senegal.
The call was made in a communiqueâ? issued by Jammeh's office in
Banjul, the Gambian capital, following renewed hostilities and violence
in Cassamance.
'President Jammeh is hereby appealing to all
parties in the conflict in Cassamance to immediately cease hostilities
without pre-condition and embark on peaceful negotiations,' the
communique said.
The Gambian leader also said: 'At a time when
the whole world is working towards food security, the violent conflict
in Cassamance has done nothing but entren chendemic poverty and acute
food shortage.
'The recent escalation of violence came at a time
when farmers are about to harvest their crops and could only mean one
thing - that the crops will be abandoned and not harvested and thereby
adding to food insecurity and more suffering."
He therefore urged Senegalese authorities and MFDC Rebel leaders to get back to the negotiation table.

- The Senegalese have responded to Jammeh by calling him a hypocrite, reports RFI. They cited the fact that Jammeh has been harboring and financing the rebels, including Salif Sadio, since Jammeh seized power in 1994. This is grand-standing.
