Gambia News : Jammeh promises to tackle terrorism, crimes in Gambia
The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has renewed his resolve towards tackling crime in the West African nation, while stressing his government's avowed policy of 'zero tolerance for terrorism, drug trafficking and other forms of crimes, PANA reported Monday.
This was part of Jammeh's speech in Banjul at the start of Gambia's new legislative year which traditionally marks the beginning of parliamentary sessions.
"All of you would agree with me that 2009 was the worse year in the history of this country, where outrageous, heinous crimes such as rape, murder, drug peddlin g , abuse and subversion were committed," Jammeh said.
In the wake of the deportation saga of a controversial Jamaican-born Muslim cleric, Abdullah al-Faisal, the Gambian government moved fast to declare 'zero tole rance' for terrorism in January.
Faisal, who is known for preaching racial hatred, was to be deported to The Gambia from Kenya via Nigeria and while en route, he was sent back to Kenya.
Recently, The Gambia also witnessed waves of dismissals of top service chiefs, soldiers and civilians following an alleged failed coup plot and drug trafficking .
Jammeh said: "let me make it very clear that I will also make sure that any penalty prescribed for those criminals would be carried out to the letter.
'Nobody has the right to take the life of an innocent person, not even the state has the right to take the life of anyone without due process of the law. "We will continue to maintain zero tolerance for hate, racism, double standards and gunboat diplomacy in the resolution of conflicts."

- Let us not borrow terms that are foreign to us. The word terrorism is not in any shape or form associated with issues in Gambia. Others are using it that doesn't mean that we should use it too. Our statemen should be careful the words they use.
