Gambia News : Jermaine Jackson defies stay-away warning, holds concert in Gambia
Defying a warning to stay away from The Gambia, American musician Jermaine Jackson, held a concert in the tiny West African nation this weekend, in honour of his later brother, Michael Jackson, PANA reported Sunday.
The Accra-based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) recently advised Jermaine to stay away from The Gambia under President Yahya Jammeh, citing human rights violations by the government.
"The Gambian leader has invited the American musician to perform in the country to a special audience of 4,000 people at his home village of Kanilai as part of a ctivities marking his birthday," MFWA said in a recent statement signed by its Director, Kwame Karikari.
Karikari said: "We call on the renowned musician to halt his trip in protest against Jammeh's reign of terror on the people of the Gambia and his complete disr egard for law and order, freedom of expression, and the fundamental human rights of the Gambian people."
PANA reports that despite MFWA's piece of advice, Jermaine is busy holding concerts in the tiny West African country.
MFWA and other rights groups believe that Jammeh is using the presence of a number of international figures in the entertainment industry to improve on the country's poor image.

- I must say its correct to tell the public about the human rights abuses of Dictator Jammeh. The former comment was saying that the westeners are stupid. Well so how come most of the Gambians want to leave their country and go to the West?
