Mauritanian Envoy Thumbs Up Gambia-Mauritania Relation
By Pap Saine
The Mauritanian Ambassador to The Gambia, Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Sidaty, told The Point in an interview that relations between The Gambia and Mauritania are excellent. He assured that the relations would be strengthened during the tenure of the new head of state, President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi, who was recently elected the new president of the republic of Mauritania.
He added that the new Mauritanian president and President Jammeh, will work closely to foster the existing bilateral relations.
He said he has just concluded a provincial tour that took him to Soma, Basse, Kaur and Farafenni from the 17th to 19th May to meet the Mauritanian Community in the country, most of whom are traders. During his tour, he also met with Gambian authorities who commended his delegation for their commitment to address the problem of Mauritanians residing in The Gambia. "The process of democratic transition has ended in a stipulated time table as announced by the former military head of state, Ould Vall," he noted, adding that there were two rounds of voting in the presidential elections from which President Abdellahi polled 52.85% of the total votes cast last March.
"The Mauritania election was commended by the Mauritanian opposition, observers and the international community as credible. The opposition will play a key role as partners in the socio-economic development of the country," he concluded.
