Gambia News : Michael Jackson’s brother ends a visit to The Gambia

Mar 03,2010 by

gambia Jermaine Jackson, American pop star, a former member of the Jackson Five pop group and brother to the legendary Michael Jackson, on Monday ended a five-day visit to The Gambia, at the invitation of Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh.

Jermaine Jackson, accompanied by his wife, Alima Rashid, told journalists before departing Banjul that he shall be returning to The Gambia to give a helping hand to the development efforts of President Yahya Jammeh.

Having spent the last remaining hours of Monday visiting the pediatric ward of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul, Jackson expressed his support for President Jammeh’s development efforts especially in the health sector.

He expressed delight at the action being taken in the child health field for he said, “the children of today are going to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

As part of their programme of activities during the visit, the Jacksons on Saturday visited President Jammeh’s home village of Kanilai, some 70 kilometres from Banjul where they were given a rapturous welcome.

There they were also exposed to traditional Gambian dancing during which Jermaine Jackson tried a few vigorous steps.

Their programme also included a visit to State House where they also took part in Friday prayers at the State House mosque. The duo also made separate calls on the President and the Gambian First Lady.

Jermaine saw his visit as a way to build bridges and promote brotherliness among Africans and their counterparts in the Diaspora as well as promote programmes they are trying to achieve.

On the death of his brother Michael, he said this had emotionally affected him and that Michael’s spirit was still very much with them.

The Jacksons also visited various sites, including historic ones like the National Museum in Banjul, a trip on the River Gambia to James Island and Juffure, both relevant to the slave trade and the story of Kunta Kinte of Alex Haley’s ‘Roots’ fame.

Jermaine stated that the experience made him certain that he originated West Africa. He expressed outrage at the cruelty of the slave traders saying he could not understand how human beings could do such things to their fellow human beings.
