Gambia News : Opposition leader urges Gambian, Senegalese gov’ts to diffuse prevailing tension
The Coordinator of The Gambia’s opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) Halifa Sallah, on Thursday called on Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh and his Senegalese counterpart, Abdoulaye Wade, to employ institutional approaches to diffuse the tension that characterised the relationship between the two countries.
Sallah was on Thursday reacting to President Jammeh’s recent claims that the Senegalese government had mounted negative campaigns and propaganda against The Gambia despite his claims that most of the development projects in this country were awarded to Senegalese companies during the transition period.
"The two states have the potential to harmonise their principles of governance, instruments, policies, programmes and projects to promote the liberty and prosperity of the two peoples in order to contribute to the means to unify the continent. Friction between the two governments should therefore be resolved amicably in accordance with the spirit of good neighbourliness," Sallah said.
He added that the governments of The Gambia and Senegal have ratified continental and regional protocols and bilateral agreements, therefore the two states should establish institutions to monitor the degree of compliance with regards to those instruments.
"Inter-ministerial and departmental mechanisms have been created by the two countries to enable the policy makers and technocrats to work together to harmonise policies, programmes and projects. Therefore, the two countries should hold joint meetings to asses the degree of implementation of these things," he urged.
