Gambia News : Pap Saine pleads not guilty to false publication
The Point newspaper's editor pleaded
not guilty on Wednesday to publishing false information and was
released on bail.
Pap Saine, managing director and editor of The Point
newspaper, was arrested on Monday in connection with a short
story published in the newspaper last week about a Gambian
diplomat who was arrested on his return from the United States.
Saine, who is also the Reuters correspondent in the tiny
West African country, was provisionally released after several
hours of questioning.
On Wednesday he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to
a charge of "false publication and broadcasting". The court
rejected prosecution calls for him to be remanded in custody,
and released Saine on bail of 50,000 dalasis ($2,000).
The case was adjourned to Feb. 19.
Saine is a career journalist who has been a Reuters
correspondent for over 30 years. His colleague and previous
editor at The Point, Deyda Hydara, was shot dead by unidentified
gunmen on the way home from work in December 2004.
Press freedom watchdogs say Hydara's death has never been
properly investigated by Gambian authorities, who they accuse of
using threats, arbitrary arrests and torture against journalists
in a country best known as a tourist destination for Europeans.
