Gambia News : President Jammeh assists Gambian flood victims

Sep 16,2009 by

gambia President Yahya Jammeh on Tuesday donated 1,750 bags of rice to Gambian flood victims in Banjul, the Kanifing Municipality and Western Region, official sources told PANA here.

At the presentation ceremony of the gifts, held at the State House grounds in Banjul, Tuesday, victims in the Kanifing Municipality received 1,000 bags of rice, those in the Banjul City Council received 211 bags and 539 bags went to victims in the Western Region.

Presenting the gifts, President Jammeh thanked those Gambians who rendered assistance to the victims immediately the incident happened.

Jammeh said he decided to donate bags of rice instead of the monetary assistance he had promised because the money could be embezzled.

He urged the local government authorities to distribute the rice in a transparent and fair manner, saying that corruption would not be tolerated and that the distribution should not be politicised because "the gift is entirely for the victims and no body else."

Receiving the gifts, Lamin Sanneh, governor of Western Region, expressed appreciation to the president for his intervention, noting that the gesture was highly welcomed.

He promised that the rice would be distributed fairly among the flood victims.
