Gambia News : President Jammeh says Africans must drop inferiority complex

Jun 02,2008 by

gambia
Addressing the opening ceremony of the ninth edition of Gambia’s “International Roots Festival” in the Gambian capital, Banjul, at the weekend, the Gambian leader emphasized the significance of the festival as not only geared at attracting investment but also an opportunity to bring Africans together.
He blamed slavery and colonialism as the principal ’culprits’ for African “inferiority complex”, while strongly arguing that no race was superior to the African race. Jammeh advised Africans and those in diaspora to unite for the progress and development of their continent.

He also underscored the richness of Africa’s cultural heritage as well as its abundant natural resources.

The “International Roots Festival”, ending 7 June, evolved from “Roots Home Coming Cultural Festival”, a programme designed by the Jammeh Administration to promote friendship and cooperation among Africans and Afro-Americans.

The name was coined from a black American author, Alex Hailey’s book “Roots” in which the author traced his family origin (Roots) to a coastal village called “ Juffurey” in the Gambia.
