Senegalese butcher fined for defying President Jammeh's ultimatum

gambia A magistrate court in Gambia has ordered a Senegalese butcher, Abdoulie Njorr, to pay a fine of 5,000 Gambian dalasis (approximately 238 US dollars) or face a four-month jail term after finding him guilty of selling beef above the presidential fixed price, sources in Banjul informed PANA Monday.

According to the sources, Abdoulie Mbackeh sitting at the Kanifing Magistrate's Court handed down the sentence after Mr. Njorr's had pleaded guilty to selling a kilo of steak at 120 Gambian dalasis (approximately 5.71 dollars) as opposed to President Jammeh's decreed price of D80 about (3.8 dollars).

Meanwhile, several other butchers were recently convicted in Gambia for similar offences after the Gambian leader issued an ultimatum calling on butchers to drastically reduce their prices or face serious consequences.

He insisted that there would be "no negotiation with butchers" in the West African nation.
