Gambia News : Slain Gambian journalist gets international award

gambia Deyda Hydara, the slain Gambian journalist has been named as one of the winners of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2009 by African People's Intercontinental Awards (APIA), sources in Banjul confirmed to PANA on Friday. The late Managing Editor of Banjul-based Point newspaper will be posthumously ho noured on 4 June together with other winners at the prestigious Washington Convention Centre in the US.

"Among the aims and objectives of the African People's Intercontinental Awards is to highlight and honour Africans and descendants of Africa around the world who have excelled in their profession," organisers said in a statement.

"We see it as an obligation to promote people with great repute within our community," the statement said.

Mr. Hydara was gunned down on 16 December, 2004 as his paper celebrated its 13th anniversary.

He was admired and respected for his critical writings and human rights advocacy in the tiny West African country.
