Gambia News : Sudden price hike hits Gambians
The sudden hike in the prices of basic commodities and the attendant economic problems have hit Gambians hard, PANA reported from here Wednesday, quoting sources in Banjul, the capital.
The Gambian government recently raised the pump price for fuel and diesel.
This, coupled with other factors such as acute shortage of foreign currencies like the American dollar, is said to have pushed up the prices of goods and services in the poor West African nation.
Companies and hotels are also said to have been embarking on a sacking spree of employees due largely to the poor performance of tourism industry.
'There is no doubt that the combination of high prices and redundancies could only lead to growth in poverty within the society,' Gambia's leading opposition mouthpiece, 'Foroyaa' newspaper, said in its latest edition.
