Gambia News : Taiwanese President postpones scheduled trip to The Gambia
The President of Taiwan, Ma Ying Jeou has decided to postpone his scheduledtrip to The Gambia and other African countries in July over concerns of some risks associated with the typhoon season, according to the Focus on Taipei News Channel Website on Sunday.
Citing the forecast of the Central Weather Bureau Meteorologists, President Ma said more typhoons were expected to hit Taiwan this year than in the recent past and bring heavier precipitation.
“Moving the trip to a time when there are fewer typhoons is more feasible”, he said, suggesting it could take place during the winter months, such as between January and February, when typhoons do not generally occur.
The President said he would apologize to Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in Africa, namely The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Sao Tome and Principe and Swaziland for the change in plans.
He added that he would explain the decision to the ambassadors of the four countries in person on May 25th when he attends a cocktail party marking the opening of the 2010 Africa Day.
