Gambia News : The Gambia marks 44th anniversary of independence with low keyed affair
The Gambia celebrates 44 years of independence from Britain on Wednesday without much fanfare this time round.
The
low key event, which is observed as a public holiday, is this year
taking the form of a decentralized programme at which the mayors of
Banjul City Council and the Kanifing Municipality, will along with
governors of the country’s five administrative regions, each taking the
salute at a morning match past of school children and voluntary
organizations in their administrative headquarters.
The simple ceremony takes the form of the mayors and
governors each reading the same speech to the school children and
voluntary organizations after the match past in the morning.
The event is expected to be graced by huge crowds
composed of parents, local personalities, officials and members of the
diplomatic corps.
In the afternoon, the programme will bring together
schools from the various regions at the Independence Stadium in Bakau
for an inter-schools athletics and football competition at the end of
which trophies and prizes will be distributed with the assistance of
local dignitaries present.
The day long programme of activities will drag into the
night when social events will be organized by the different
organizations and youth groups in their bid to raise funds for
different purposes.
The entertainment activities for the day include a
musical show in the Kanifing Municipality by the Senegalese music
maestro Youssou Ndour, who will be performing for the staff club of the
telecommunications company (Gamtel/Gamcel), while the local Kora star
Jaliba Kuyateh will also be performing for the Marine Workers Union.
This is in addition to dinners and special programmes
organised by hotels and restaurants as well as individuals in their
homes or at night clubs located in the tourist resort parts of the
Kanifing Municipality
There are also special radio and television broadcasts
to commemorate the occasion covering the period since independence in
1965.
