Gambia News : 'The Gambian godfather' contests elections in Hungary
Gambian emigrant and human rights campaigner, Gibril Deen, is making plans to run for office in Hungary, a country in which far right is on the brink of entering parliament in the April elections.
Opinion polls give the far-right party Jobbik 6-7 percent support, which could lead to it winning dozens of seats in the Hungarian parliament. It won three in the European parliament last year.
In order to qualify to contest for a seat in parliament, Deen needs to secure 750 signatures in his district. "The preparation is underway, and people are helping me to get the required signatures," he said.
Gibril Deen has been named 'The Gambian godfather' because of his enduring passion for human rights and integration. He has founded the Hungarian Mahatma Gandhi Human Rights Movement to fight injustice, help emigrants integrate in Hungarian society, and promote African culture.
As a member of the minority committee of the Hungarian Football Federation, Deen has also used sports to counter racism and fight intolerance.
If successful, Gibril Deen will be representing minorities in the Hungarian parliament. He is contesting under the Social democratic party Szociál Demokrata Párt (SZDP), one of thirteen minor political parties in the country.
Gibril Deen studied in Russia and other countries in Eastern Europe before settling in Hungary.
Hungary will hold elections on April 11 and 25.
