Gambia : The Gambian President Receives The Guinea Bissau Envoy
President Jammeh on Tuesday 6th February received at State House a special envoy of the President of Guinea Bissau, Jao Nino Vieira. The envoy, who is also Foreign Minister told reporters afterwards that his mission was an urgent one dealing with the development of bilateral relations between the two countries. He also hailed the already existing relations as “very warm and cordial.” Currently three Gambians, including the leader of the failed 1981 Gambian coup, Mr. Kukoi Samba Sanyang are known to be under the custody of military authorities in Bissau. The Gambian authorities want the three men to be repatriated and have thrice sent means of repatriating them to Banjul, but there are some influential elements in Bissau who have been blocking all such attempts. Sources have told the Gambia Journal that the first Gambian delegation sent to escort back the detainees, was led by Dr. Tamsirr Mbowe, the Secretary of State for Health. The subsequent second and third delegation were led by CDS(Commander of the Defense Staff) Col Lang Tombong Jatta and his assistant Peter Singhateh, respectively. Together with Senegal, Guinea Bissau wants The Gambia to hand over separatist Casamance rebel leader, Salifu Sadio. Authorities in both Bissau and Dakar suspect that President Jammeh is hiding Mr. Sadio who was flushed out of a corridor along the Senegal-Guinea border about a year ago. Mr. Sajor and some of his men managed to break out of a siege after months of heavy fighting and were said to have fled into The Gambia. President Jammeh was also said to have given the Bissau authorities and undisclosed sum of money and sixteen vehicles to facilitate the desired repatriation.
