Gambia News : US embassy assists Gambian communities with US$ 40,000
The US embassy in Banjul, in partnership with local communities in The
Gambia, has given out US$ 40,000 to assist seven communities through
the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help (SSH) programme.
The SSH is a grassroots assistance programme that allows US
embassies to respond relatively quickly to requests from communities
for small community-based development projects.
This year, the money is going to seven communities in the Gambia.
In
his statement at the signing ceremony of the agreement for the 2008/09
SSH projects, Ambassador Barry Wells of the US, said the SSH fund was
one of the links between individuals and communities, adding that the
US embassy was proud to be part of the projects.
According to
him, the SSH programme is different from most development programmes
because "the projects are proposed and designed by the communities
themselves, and the communities must make a real contribution, be it
labour, material or money, to its execution".
He added "it is only through such a cooperation and community involvement that true development can succeed.
“I
want to assure all of you that we value your contributions to these
projects. Successful implementation will depend largely on the
commitment of your communities, as laid out in the agreements we will
sign today."
The projects range from wells and provision of
milling machines to support for a foundation that produces wheel chairs
for people with disabilities.
