Gambia News : United States sues Gambia over rights records
The American Congress has received a bill calling for the suspension of financial help to the Gambian government for failing to improve on its rights records, PANA reported from here Tuesday.
US Senator, Richard J. Durbin, and a host of other Senators have been pressing for the release of disappeared Gambian journalist, Chief Ebrima Manneh, who is believed to be under the custody of President Yahya Jammeh's administration.
'Of the funds appropriated under the headings â~International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement' and â~International Military Education and Jammeh 4 Training' that are available for assistance for The Gambia, not more than US$ 120,000 may be made available unless the Secretary of State certifies to the Committees on Appropriations that the Government of The Gambia is making significant efforts to release and account for political prisoners, including Ebrima Manneh,' the bill stated.
The American law makers are also said to have attempted to block the Gambia from accessing loan or any other financial assistance form global institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

- No Khaleel, with free speech comes obligations. It's our obligation and ONLY ours to clean up after ourselves & decide solely how and when if necessary, to use what suitable set of tools in the administration of our affairs...no ill feelings though.

- It is dissapointing to read some of these comments on here. Let's face it, the average Gambian have no say what so ever in what is going on in our nation, might as well let the West come to our aid in the form of free speech. Unnecessary resistance.
