Gambia News : West African journalists honour slain Gambian colleague

gambia The West African Journalists Association (WAJA) will Thursday, 16 October, honour the late proprietor and editor of the Point Newspaper, Deyda Hydara, who was gunned down 16 December 2004, with the conferment of a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.

A press statement from The Gambia Press Union (GPU), here Saturday, said the aware will be confered at a cocktail reception at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

According to the statement, the first recipient of this prestigious award, Hydara was a foundation member and first treasurer of WAJA.

“The award, a commendation of Hydara’s bravery, brevity, objectivity, beliefs and unwavering pursuit of the truth and the cardinal principles of his profession - journalism - is symbolic of the struggle for the press freedom and freedom of expression across Africa” WAJA stated.
