Gambia: Pay Your Bills or Face The NIA - President Jammeh

Apr 16,2007 by

gambia

The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has warned Gambians that failing to pay monthly utility bills would lead to arrest and detention by the National Intelligence Agency, NIA. President Jammeh said this in a mass celebration held on Saturday 14th April, at the Buffer Zone where thousands sang, danced and ate and drank with noisy merriment in celebration of the ruling APRC victories in recent presidential and legislative elections. Mr. Jammeh said his government has already solved the country’s decades old electricity problems but would not allow “unpatriotic elements to sabotage our good work.” He said he had heard that people were complaining about the high cost of electricity but such people ought to disconnect themselves from the electricity grid and resort to using generators instead and “shut up.”  He chastised the opposition for lying behind such propaganda “unpatriotic and selfish.” He however predicted  that many most members of the political opposition would die of what he called “heart attack” out of frustration soon.”

The Gambian leader also did not mince his words on Muslim clerics, some of whom he called “hypocrites and unbelievers covered in Arab gowns.”  For his supporters Jammeh had only praises. He commended the people of Kanifing municipality for voting for all the five candidates that the APRC had filled in for the municipality’s five constituencies. Secretary of State Nenneh Macdoual Gaye also spoke heaping praises on the Gambian president and thanking the people for voting for the APRC so massively. Other speakers included the five National Assembly members who all thanked the Gambian leader for selecting them to run for the elections.  The drumming and dancing went on all night. Organizers say seven bulls were slaughtered for the occasion.
