Gambia: 14 Burnt in Gas Explosion
At least 14 people from Kanifing Estate, are currently admitted at the RVTH, after sustaining severe burns caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder in the house of one Ousman Njie of No. G86 in the Kanifing Estate.
Narrating the cause of the incident to the Daily Observer, Sainabou Colley, wife of the landlord, said the 14 victims were their neighbours, who were inside the building to help put out the fire when the gas exploded. She said that the fire was caused by a candle which was carried by one of her sons who had caught whiff of a gas leakage and was searching the house to determine where it was coming from. "As he entered one of the rooms containing the gas cylinder, it exploded, badly burning him. The sound of the explosion alerted our neighbours who rushed in to help. Some of them who entered the house were caught by the explosion leaving them seriously burnt. The total number is 18 but only 14 sustained severe burns and are currently admitted", she said.
However, Mrs Colley could not confirm the exact extent of the damages caused by the fire. "I cannot say exactly how much, but the fire ravaged the whole building", she stated.
Sira Kujabi, the elder sister of Mrs Colley expressed shock over the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of those who were hospitalised due to the incident.
