Gambia: Ebrima Sohna Spills the Beans

May 09,2007 by

Two GFA First Division giants, Steve Biko and Wallidan FC are scrambling for Ebrima Sohna, a Gambian U-20 player who has currently signed a contract with a Norwegian First Division side.

Both clubs claimed ownership of the player, a scenario that prompted the national football governing body to set-up a special Task Force Committee to probe into the matter. The committee comprised of Kebba Ceesay, Vice-Chairman of the GFA Technical Committee, Badou Jassey, a veteran referee, Lamin Camara, a trained lawyer and Charles Thomas.

However, as the committee continues its investigation as to which of the clubs own the player, the person concerned, Ebrima Sohna, refused to remain mute on the matter.

In a marathon telephone interview with Benjamin Wally Joof of West Coast Radio on Monday, Sohna said he is currently a bonafide property of Steve Biko FC and not his former club, Wallidan FC.

He said: "Before leaving The Gambia, I was registered by Steve Biko and I had my player license from the club. I joined Steve Biko as a free player and I wrote to the Gambia Football Association requesting my transfer after the expiration of my contract with Wallidan."

Sohna, who has already secured a permanent place in his new club, said: "I sat for a complete year without touching a ball and I decided to join Steve Biko soon after I became a free player."

He added: "I did not betray Wallidan as many will think, but I moved to Steve Biko because I wanted a brighter future for myself". He heaped praises on Kemo Ceesay of Steve Biko for his assistance in moulding his career.

"Kemo did a lot for me. He was behind my going to the French giants, Auxerre, for a trial last year," he said.

This is the second scramble between the two clubs in two seasons. The two clubs were sometimes last season involved in a bitter feud after Wallidan claimed development fees from Steve Biko after after Mustapha Jarju's move to SK Lierse of Belgium.
