Gambia U-20 Registered First Defeat

Dec 18,2006 by

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria yesterday inflicted the Gambia U-20 their first defeat in the history of the team since its inception in April this year.

In an international friendly match played last night at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, the Nigeria U-20 team better known as Flying Eagles beat the young Scorpions 2-1.

The Gambia first opened the scores in the 14th minutes of the encounter through Sarja Leigh, who capitalised on a lapse of the Nigerian defence to beat goalkeeper Olufemi.

The Nigerian equalised in the 38th minutes through their playmaker Solomon James from a kick in the 25 yards.

At resumption of the second half the Gambia tried to take the game to the Nigerians but their option was cut short when Surajo Sadiq netted the second goal for Nigeria.

The young Scorpions pushed for the equaliser but lacked concentration in front of the Nigerian goalmouth.

Furmos Mendy for the Gambia, Atouda Shakibu, and Tunkara Michael were yellow carded.

Speaking to journalists after the match, coach Bonu Johnson said that the test match was good for them as it enables them to test new players for the championship.

“We would go back and learn from our mistakes before the next match” he concluded.
