Gambia News : Gambian leader receives World Cup
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh said on Wednesday that the presence of the FIFA World Cup trophy in his country should motivate it to win it one day. 'By the grace of the almighty Allah, the Gambia will be the first or second country in Africa to win the cup. If we win it once, we will continue to win it and by three times, we will retain the cup,' Jammeh said after he was presented with the trophy which is being sent on a worldwide tour.
He told thousands of football loving Gambians who defied a heavy downpour to throng the Independence Stadium in Banjul to catch a glimpse of the trophy that the World Cup is a guest today, but will be a permanent resident of the Gambia one day.
Emmanuel Maradas, FIFA media officer, said Gambia was the first country to welco me trophy with more than 25,000 people adding that it showed its significance of them.
According to him, he has been traveling with the trophy since 2001 but the reception received in the Gambia is unprecedented.
The president declared today as 'half day for work' to allow all government officials to go to the stadium.
