Gambia News : Gambian national football team to play a friendly against Gabon in Paris
The Gambia national football team, the Scorpions are scheduled to meet
Gabon in an international friendly match in Paris on 11 February, 2009,
APA learns here Sunday.
The President of The
Gambia Football Association (GFA), Seedy Kinteh, in confirming this to
journalists on Sunday, said they had secured the international friendly
against Gabon’s national team as part of the overall effort to build a
formidable side for the 2012 London Olympic Games and the next African
Nations Cup qualifiers.
According to Kinteh, the Gambian players will travel to
France from their different locations across the world for the February
11 encounter.
Earlier on, the Gambia national team participated in
the first round of the 2010 combined World Cup and African Nations Cup
qualifiers, in which it failed to qualify despite finishing second in
Group 6 behind Algeria, due to a technicality arising from a
Confederation of African Football (CAF) formula.
It was after that performance that the GFA decided to
keep the team for the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2012 African
Nations Cup qualifiers.
Therefore, Kinteh said the coming encounter with Gabon is in line with that decision.
