Gambia News : Gambia’s Baby Scorpions jet back into Banjul from UK training
The Gambia’s Under-17 football squad, the Baby Scorpions who are the
current African champion cup holders, have completed their three week
training in England and are scheduled to return home by special flight
on Friday, APA learns here.
During their stay
in England, the team lost two and won three out of the five matches
they played in encounters with Under- 17 teams from the United States
and football academies in the UK.
Their last encounter, to have taken place Thursday with
Chelsea Academy, was cancelled at the last minute for some unknown
reasons.
The squad’s three week sojourn in England is part of
preparations for their participation in the junior world cup taking
place in Nigeria this month.
In interviews given in a live sports programme
broadcast Thursday over a local private radio, team members, their
coach and captain spoke optimistically of their high expectations for
the Nigerian venture following their British experience.
They attributed their early losses in the UK to the
replacement of 11 members of the original squad after failing to
qualify the age test conducted by FIFA. That was the original squad
which won The Gambia its second African junior championships cup played
in Algiers earlier this year.
However, after three weeks of training and playing
together, they said a new formation has successfully been put into
shape to embark on the world cup challenge in Nigeria with high hopes.
