Gambia News : Red Bulls ink Sainey Touray

Aug 31,2008 by

gambia The Red Bulls signed Gambian forward Sainey Touray _ nicknamed Ballack _ to a developmental deal. To make room for on the developmental roster, they gave Sinisa Ubiparipovic a much-deserved bump up to the senior roster. Apparently the kid we told you about here made an impression.

The 18-year-old had played for Wallidan FC of the Gamabian first division from 2005-08, scoring a team-high nine goals this season and leading the club to the 2008 Gambian league title. Before that, he'd become the league's youngest striker when he joined second-division Tallinding United in 2003.

The lithe (scrawny?) 6-foot-1, 150-lb. forward trialed at Arsenal last year. He'd already earned the Golden Boot when Gambia's U-17 team won the Ivorian four-nation Football tournament, but then he made his U-20 debut March 25, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Chile at the Suwon International tourney.

This is what Juan Carlos Osorio said weeks ago: “I think he has the tools, but I think he is raw. He needs to train more and if he stays with us I think we can develop him. But he certainly needs to work in certain areas. Sanna (Nyassi) is probably quicker than he is, but he is a good player and he has done good things. I will not say that he is the solution to what we are looking for. Good player, good player, good technique, good touch. He seems to be a good kid.’’

Does this and the Red Bulls red-hot scoring of late mean that _ the recent back-and-forth regarding Kandji aside _ the Red Bulls are done looking at forwards? Not at all.

"I wouldn’t say desperation, but need. I won't let myself get fooled by all this hype,'' Osorio said. "It's true I'm trying to stengthen the team, and I will continue trying to do so. I will strengthen the team in departments I believe we need to.''
