Gambia News : World Cup trophy arrives in Gambian capital
The long awaited World Cup trophy, which has been travelling around
Africa, arrives in Banjul from Mali on Tuesday evening, but will be
received in the absence of President Yahya Jammeh by Vice President
Isatou Njie-Saidy instead.
This is because
the Gambian leader would have left for France earlier in the day to
take part in the UNESCO General Assembly in Paris where he is to
deliver a speech in accordance with a previously arranged schedule.
Nonetheless, the announcement of the President’s trip
to the French capital by radio and television on Monday evening caught
many people by surprise, as previous announcements were made that he
would be receiving the trophy at a public ceremony at the Independence
Stadium on Wednesday.
To that end, a great deal of public sensitisation has
already gone out through discussions, newspaper articles and
announcements to the extent that a large crowd of footbal enthusiasts
especially are now expected to be at the airport when the trophy
arrives from Mali on Tuesday evening 7 October, and at the stadium on
Wednesday, when the trophy was, by previous announcements, to be given
to President Jammeh and put on display.
An elaborate arrangement which includes security and
the movement of transport has already been put in place in view of the
country’s hosting of the trophy from 7 to 9 October. The football
association, the ministry of sports, the municipalities of Banjul,
Kanifing and Brikama and the local coca cola bottling plant as sponsors
of the round the world tour for the cup have all been mobilised with
coca cola taking a prominent part in the publicity drive as sponsors of
the whole event.
