Uwua invites 10 pros for Gambia
Flying Eagles’ coach, Godwin Uwua, has invited 10 foreign based players ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly with the Gambia Under-21 national side in Banjul.
Uwua revealed that the 10 foreign professionals would be joined by their home-based teammates as Flying Eagles begins their build-up towards Congo 2007 African Youth Championship in January.
In a telephone chat with Nigeriansportsonline.com, the former Bendel Insurance tactician revealed that he met with Nigeria Football Association (NFA) chieftains on Tuesday, where he had useful discussion with the technical department of the Glass House on the players he would need to prosecute the friendly.
According to him, only the best legs have been penciled down for the encounter in a bid to avoid any embarrassment given the fact that the Gambians would also parade most of the players that featured at the last Under-17 World Cup in Peru.
"To be candid with you, I just submitted a lists of foreign-based players I would need to prosecute the friendly against Gambia. I have submitted the lists to them and waiting for their approval, before leaving for the match," he said.
"The door is shut against any invitations now, as regards the friendly, but I am not ruling out any invitation in the nearest future. We are still building the team that will shock the rest of Africa in Congo come January," he assured.
Nigeria edged-out Gabon and Rwanda to book a place in the Africa Youth Championship billed for Congo Brazzaville in 2007.
