Gambia: Zonal Football Championship Starts On Nov 24
The annual zonal football championship that
gathers the eight major nawettan centres in the Greater Banjul and the
Western Region will kick off on friday, November 24, Observer Sport has
been informed.
Already, the organiser, the
national football governing body alongside the eight zones held three
draws for the 2006 super nawettan season which showed the defending
champions, Sukuta , paired in Group A alongside Brikama, Gunjur and the
City Boys, Banjul. The Group B comprise of the 2005 finalists,
Serrekunda West, Bakau, Serrekunda East and Lamin.
On the incentives of this year's tournament, the
organising committee stated that the lucky winner will bag a giant
trophy, twenty-five gold medals and a cash prize of D25,000.00 while
the runners up will receive twenty-five silver medals and a cash prize
of D15,000.00. The third spot holders, according to the organisers,
will go home with twenty-five bronze medals while a consolation prize
of D6,000 will be given to the remaining six participating. In
addition, all the eight teams in the championship will each receive a
preparatory cost of D4,000.00.
On the venues
for this year's matches, Observer Sports has learnt, the organising
committee identified three different venues-Brikama mini-stadium,
Serrekunda East and Serrekunda West mini-stadia as the venues for this
year's matches.
This year's tournament is partly sponsored by David and Janis Norman, a British couple resident in The Gambia.
