Residents of Basse and its surrounding villages have expressed their disappointment, frustration and concern over the erratic power cuts which, according to them, are destroying their electrical appliances. In an interview the this reporter, Momodou Wury Jallow, a businessman and resident of Basse, claims to have lost almost five refrigerators as a result of the power cuts. He challenged the management of NAWEC to explain to the people of Basse what is responsible for these power cuts. Muhammed Dibbasey, another businessman and resident of Basse, also claims that he lost a television set and a deep freezer as a result of the power cuts. He argued that the rural electrification project has still not solved the problem of electricity shortage in the country. When contacted to react on the claims, Fafanding Kinteh, a senior personnel of NAWEC in Basse, declined to comment on the issue and instead referred this reporter to another official called Mr. Faal. However, Mr. Faal's position was that he is only in charge of the generators and that the generators are working. He again referred this reporter to one Mr. Joof, said to be the Provincial Operations Manager responsible for transmission and distribution who also declined to make any comments, when approached, stating that he does not receive any complaints from his people that such a situation is happening in Basse. However, efforts to talk to the NAWEC PRO on the said issue proved futile. But more efforts will be made to talk to the said PRO. |
