Gambia News : Commonwealth Games General Assembly meeting opens in Banjul

The 2008 Commonwealth Games General Assembly has opened in Banjul with
a closed-door meeting among the delegates to discuss matters that
affect the organisation and allow participating countries seek support
for their bids.Deputy executive director of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and desk officer for the Commonwealth general assembly meeting, Mr. Lawrence Bruce, disclosed this to PANA here Tuesday. Bruce said the meeting was expected to be attending by 71 Commonwealth countries, but as the meeting kicked-off, all the delegates are yet to arrive for the meeting. Robert Mcveigh, Chairman of Northern Ireland Commonwealth, told journalists, the Commonwealth Games are a great opportunity for small countries to market their names by encouraging tourism with big countries. According to Mcveigh, the main goal of the games is to foster relationship, improve on organisational ability and preparations ahead of the games and learn about other people?s cultures and attitudes. |
