Communities in Gambia's Western Region have ended a week long sensitization campaign against bush fires and deforestation, sources in Banjul informed PANA on Wednesday.

The campaign, involving dwellers in 16 communities, was spearheaded by the Western Region Governor's office in collaboration with St. Joseph's Family Farm Centre, Regional Forestry Department, Brikama Area Council, Gambia Fire and Rescue Service and Kanilai Farm owned by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

During the exercise, members of the communities were sensitized on the importance and benefits of forests as sources of fuel, medicines, rainfall and grazing for animals among others.

The dangers of bush fires to the forest and communities as a whole were also discussed.
