The continuous bombardment of the Gaza strip by the Israeli defence forces is a violation of the fundamental rights of the Palestinians, said President Yahya Jammeh on Wednesday evening in a televised New Year message aired over Gambia Television.

President Jammeh, whol aunched a scathing criticism of the international community, pointed out that the West, who formed a united front during World War 2 to defend their fundamental rights against Nazi Germany, is now reluctant to censor the current military onslaught on Gaza by Israel. He added that while the Israelis continue to massacre the Palestinians, the flimsy excuse given by the West is that Israel has the right to defend herself from Hamas rocket attacks.

Jammeh indicated that the West in collaboration with the United Nations was resolved in its efforts to see an end to the military onslaught on Georgia by Russia. This, he said was owing to the fact that those who were dying in that conflict were whites and Christians. Jammeh however said that the Palestinians like the Georgians are human beings who should be accorded their basic rights.

President Jammeh also swiped at the International Criminal Court for keeping mute over the war on Gaza.

The Gambian leader pointed out that if the Palestinian conflict is not resolved by the international community, the world will not be at peace.

Turning to Africa, Jammeh said there is need for the African countries to unite; pointing out that it is the only means of uplifting Africa from its present status.

He stated that Africa is the richest continent in terms of natural resources, but the most impoverished on earth. Therefore he said Africa needs to unite to enable her to determine the prices of her raw materials.
