Gambia News : Gambian leader sacks the Chief Justice

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Monday terminated the services of the Chief Justice of the Gambia, Justice Abdou Kareem Savage, and replaced him with Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, a Nigerian born judge who had in the past served as the President of the Gambia Court of Appeal.

Justice Savage was the first and only Gambian legal practitioner to have ever occupied this prestigious position. He was appointed in February 2006, shortly after the unceremonious sacking of his predecessor, Justice Stephan Alan Brobbey, a Ghanaian judge.

In a related development, the Gambian leader also appointed Justice Ester Ota, a Nigerian judge as the President of the Gambia Court of Appeal.

Justice Otta rose to prominence in April 2001 after she sentenced Musa Suso, a prominent ruling party Member of Parliament to a jail term of eight years on drug charges preferred against him by the state law office.
