Five Gambian superior court judges were sworn in at the High Court in Banjul on Wednesday, as part of efforts to stem the rising cases of delay in court proceedings.

Emmanual Akomaye Agim was sworn in as the Chief Justice of The Gambia; Justice Esther Awo Ota as President, Court of Appeal; Justice Gilbert Abiodu Obayan as Judge, Court of Appeal; Justice James Kalaile as Judge Court of Appeal and Justice Emmanuel Olusegun Fagbenle as Judge of the High Court of The Gambia.

Speaking after the swearing in, Justice Agim said there was the need to focus all attention on reducing delays in court proceedings at all levels.

He said the greatest impediment in ensuring access to justice was delay in court proceedings, saying such delay also increases the cost of seeking justice.

Justice Agim warned that the development could erode the confidence of the public in not just the courts but in the legal sector.

He said the judiciary; the ministry of justice, the bar, the police and other agencies involved in the administration of justice had a shared responsibility to reduce the delay in the justice process.
