Gambia News : Gambian women commended over TeleFoods projects

The country representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in The Gambia, Dr. Babagana Ahmadu, has commended Gambian women for their disposition to the rural TeleFoods projects.

Ahmadu, who was addressing Gambians women at the end of the two-week TeleFoods projects Thursday, said the attitude of the women was a remarkable achievement for the projects.

He promised to continue working closely with the women and to support them in terms of capacity building to strengthen their projects and programmes.

According to him, the project is a short-term programme of 12 months' duration during which the women are closely monitored, and farmers' capacities strengthened in the interest of sustaining the projects.

He said at the end of the 12 months, FAO will hand over the projects to the farmers, who will then continue the programme without any financial support from the organisation.

Ahmadu disclosed further that the FAO had, within the last two weeks, launched 10 projects across the country, amounting to over D2 million, aimed at empowering farmers' associations.

The FAO country boss said they organisation continue to offer technical support even after the 12 months.

The FAO-sponsored Telefood projects which were launched in six villages in the last two weeks, is aimed at addressing the problems faced by small groups, women a ssociations, women farmer associations and the youths who are having problems in terms of accessing basic farming inputs like fertilizers, seeds and some basic tools.
