The United State Embassy has approved five projects amounting to 1.7
million dalasi (about US$62,600) for three media institutions and two
civil society organisations in The Gambia. The awardees are the Kerewan Community Radio, the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), the Gambia Press Union, the Network of Human Right Journalists (NHRJ)- The Gambia and Aid the Children Network. Announcing the awards here Thursday, US Ambassador to the Gambia, Mr. Barry Wells, commended the recipients for being selected under the US Embassy's 2008 Democracy and Human Rights Fund (DHRF) projects. Ambassador Wells explained that DHRF provides assistance through small grants to local civil society organisations and Community Based Organisations (CBOs). While noting that the number of grant recipients is small, the Ambassador said 'those that are funded have a tremendous impact on social development, quality of life and sustainability in their respective communities.' Mr. Wells acknowledged the progress made by the previously funded projects, saying: 'In the past year, I have visited some of the villages and communities which were previously recipients and I have seen the difference these projects can make. This year we are able to fund 5 projects under the DHRF. |
