Gambia News : Former speaker of Gambian legislature dies

The death has been reported on Sunday of Mustapha Baboucarr Wadda, a former speaker of the Gambia National Assembly shortly after the transition to civilian rule from 1997 to 2001.

Mr. Wadda, who died after a brief illness, was laid to rest on Monday afternoon in Banjul and his funeral was attended by several local dignitaries as well as a cross section of the Gambian community.

A career civil servant, Mustapha Wadda had served in various capacities in the Gambian civil service in both the first and second republics, rising to the position of Secretary General and head of the civil service in the office of the President.

He was later elected Speaker of the National Assembly until his retirement in 2001.
