The Spanish Director General for Immigration, Altoro Avero on Wednesday March 21st paid a courtesy call to Vice President Aja Isatou Njie Saidy at State House in Banjul. Though the visit is being called a “courtesy” one many believe it is in connection with the problem of illegal immigration that the European kingdom has been battling with over the last couple of years. Spain has been waging a frantic diplomatic initiative in West Africa, the area of origin of most of its illegal immigrants, in order to stem the tide of youth emigration and ensure the smooth return of deported immigrants. Although Gambian government officers, including those of the Department of State for External Affairs, have been declaring their willingness to cooperate with the Spanish authorities over the issue, President Jammeh is on record saying that nothing can stop the dangerous exodus.
