The Executive Director of the Gambia National Olympic Committee [GNOC] George Gomez has stated that the Gambia is serving as a study case under the International Olympic Committee [IOC] in its pioneering role of women in sports initiative in the Gambia.Mr. Gomez said the GNOC women in sports festival, which would be staged later this month, is aimed at mainstreaming women in sports development and to do away with rhetoric and be action oriented. Speaking to Journalists at his office on Monday Mr. Gomez said the programme requires collective participation and prayers by all Gambians especially women, in order to make it a successful study. He highlighted that the Women in sports festival would feature series of activities which include a training programme for Journalists on the 16th to 17th November at the Paradise Suites, a National forum on women and sports at the Kairaba Beach Hotel on the 18th of November, followed by a female “6” a side football tournament on the 18th, 19th and 20th November 2006. He added that as part of the activities marking the women sports festival, there would be a women solidarity March on November 23rd which would be marked with a presentation of Petition for equal opportunities for Women, to the Hon. SoS for Women Affairs. Mass sports for women would be staged on November 25th similar to May Day Sports and a tree planting at the GNOC site the same day. “Women should be encouraged and empowered so that when they are given responsibility they can pick it up with confidence and also the need to take part in sporting activities in order to remain fit and not to develop laziness towards their wellbeing” he noted. |
