Gambia News : Jammeh Absent From Addis

President Jammeh once again failed to attend the African Union Heads Of State Summit that opened in Addis Ababa on Thursday. Since the March 21st 2006 alleged attempted coup against his government Mr. Jammeh has cut down on his overseas travels drastically. Before this Jammeh hardly let a month go by without going out on one or the other international gathering. But some observers say this trend of home-stay intensified after Ghanaian authorities started raising questions about the July 2006 massacre of scores of Ghanaian immigrants in The Gambia. Though the authorities in Banjul have persistently denied any knowledge of the killings Accra has maintained its stand with growing assertion. Mass protests reportedly awaited President Jammeh if he had attended last summer’s summit in Accra and many now think it is not only the coup that is keeping the Gambian leader home but what one observer called “peer scorn and pressure.” Jammeh also failed to attend a recent ECOWAS meeting in Ouagadougou and a Commonwealth Heads of State summit in Kampala.
