Gambia News : Gambia marks 43 years of Independence

Gambians Monday marked their country's 43 years of independence in an atmosphere of pomp and pageantry, national broadcaster, Radio Gambia and Television Service reported.

Also on hand to celebrate with the Gambian President Yahya Jammeh and his compatriots were President Levy Mwanawasa of Zambia, his wife, Maureen, and the Cape V e rdian leader Pedro Pires.

Elegantly dressed school children, cultural troupes and members of the security forces were involved in a march past to mark the ceremony.

Later Monday, President Jammeh is expected to host a dinner for the visiting dig nitaries.
